Ferrets - Lupron Therapy
Lupron, also known as leuprolide acetate, is an artificial hormone that is used to treat ferrets with adrenal disease complex. What is not as well know is that Lupron may also be used to prevent adrenal disease. Based on work by Dr. Cathy Johnson-Delaney, we administer Lupron to all ferrets every January. This seems to reset the ferret's internal clock so that the adrenal gland "calms down". Peliminary results using Lupron on ferrets once or twice each winter suggests that that adrenal disease complex may be delayed or even prevented with regular Lupron treatments. Since adrenal disease complex affects a large number of ferrets over three years of age, this is one of the more important things you can do to ensure your pet lives a long healthy life.
